Faculty Profiles

The Geriatrics Fellowship Program at Sparrow/MSU comprises an interdisciplinary group of health professionals including nurse practitioners, social workers, nutritionists, mental health specialists, and rehabilitation therapists; as well as physicians who specialize in geriatric medicine. The physician faculty have allopathic or osteopathic training, a background in family medicine and internal medicine, and additional certification in geriatric medicine.

Kevin Foley, MD, FACP, Program Director
Dr. Foley is director of academic and clinical operations in geriatrics in the Michigan State University Department of Family Medicine. His primary role is to be the academic leader of geriatric medicine at MSU. He also holds a secondary appointment in the CHM Department of Medicine. In addition to providing clinical care at the Sparrow Senior Health Center, he serves as Medical Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Service in the neuroscience department at Saint Mary’s health care in Grand Rapids. Dr. Foley completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Michigan. He was formerly a staff geriatrician at the Cleveland Clinic.

Mark Ensberg, MD, Associate Program Director
Dr. Ensberg is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Michigan State University and Director of the Geriatric Fellowship. In addition, he is an Associate Faculty member and Clinical Training Coordinator for the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan. He received his medical degree from the University of South Dakota and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Michigan State University. After three years of private practice, Dr. Ensberg completed a Geriatric Fellowship at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ensberg is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.

Kris Gaumer, DO
Dr. Gaumer is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Michigan State University. She completed the geriatric fellowship at Sparrow.

Raza Haque, MD
Dr. Haque is an Assistant Professor with the MSU Department of Family Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Dow Medical College, University of Karachi. This was followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, and completion of the Geriatric Fellowship at MSU in 2004. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society, and has a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Haque is Medical Director of Faith Haven Senior Care Center and offers subacute care at the Ingham County Extended Care Facility. He has a scholarly interest in preventing polypharmacy and falls in the elderly.

Francis A. Komara, DO
Dr. Komara graduated from the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977, completed his residency at Mt. Clemens General Hospital Osteopathic Internship program in 1978. He is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice as well as in Geriatric Medicine.

James Mayle, MD
Dr. Mayle practiced gastroenterology in mid-Michigan for 30 years. He was a faculty member in CHM for 25 years and retired from MSU in 2003, having most recently served as Chief of the Gastroenterology Section, CHM Department of Medicine. He then practiced until 2008 with the Michigan Gastroenterology Institute. Dr. Mayle completed the MSU/Sparrow Geriatric Fellowship in June 2009, and has now joined the Department of Family Medicine as a geriatrician. He also holds a secondary appointment in the CHM Department of Medicine. Research interests include gastrointestinal issues in the elderly. Dr. Mayle received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology through the Ohio State University Hospitals.
